Team History[edit]

After an absence of 64 years, professional baseball returned to Orangeburg, SC with the formation of the Orangeburg Cardinals of the Western Carolinas League in 1973. The co-op team went 50-72, the worst record in the six-team league, under manager Jim Piersall. They scored the fewest runs (451) in the circuit and allowed the most (609). OF Tito Landrum (.279/~.348/.340, .994 fielding, 21 steals in 24 tries) went on to the best career from the team while P Joe Kubeck (11-11, 2.77) had possibly the best season, finishing 8th in the league in ERA. The other candidate is P Mike Ibarguen (8-11, 2.46) was fourth in ERA but had a worse RA and record; he did allow fewer baserunners per inning than Kubeck and struck out batters slightly more often. In 1974 they were replaced by the Orangeburg Dodgers.
