Ogden A's

From BR Bullpen

Ogden, UT reached the AAA level in 1979 with the creation of the Ogden A's, an Oakland A's farm club. The team finished third in the five-team southern division in both halves with a cumulative record of 72-75 for manager Jose Pagan. Their attendance of 77,027 was over 50,000 less than the next team (Vancouver) as the Pacific Coast League was adding on a much smaller city. Mike Morgan (5-5, 3.48) and Rickey Henderson (.309/~.432/.448, 44 steals in 53 tries in just 71 games, missing the league lead by two in half a season of work) were on the brink of long major-league careers (of very different quality). The star of the show, though, was 1B Danny Goodwin (.349/~.438/.608, 20 HR, second in the PCL in average and presumably the slugging leader).

Pagan's club finished fourth in both halves in 1980 - their record of 59-83 was second-worst in the 10-team PCL and their attendance (76,336) again was the worst with #9 Portland over 50,000 ahead. Morgan went 6-9 with a 5.40 ERA for the team, which led the PCL in runs allowed (847). OF Derek Bryant (.342/~.415/.475) lost the batting title by a single point to Danny Heep and C Pat Dempsey (.318/~.361/.416) also finished among the leaders in average. DH Tim Hosley (.301/~.415/.519) led the league with 26 homers, one more than 1B Kelvin Moore (.282/~.338/.525); Hosley's 102 RBI were second in the league, followed by Moore's 100. The club did not return in 1981 and professional baseball did not return to Ogden for 14 years, at which point returned to their usual Rookie League spot in the Pioneer League after two seasons at AAA.
