Outfielder Nochie Varner was traded on July 23, 2002 with David Espinosa and Jorge Cordova to the Detroit Tigers for Matt Boone and Brian Moehler.

Varner later was the "player to be named later" when the Arizona Diamondbacks traded Chris Capuano, Craig Counsell, Chad Moeller, Lyle Overbay, Jorge de la Rosa, and Junior Spivey to the Milwaukee Brewers on December 1, 2003 for Richie Sexson, Shane Nance, and a player to be named later. The Brewers sent Varner on December 15, 2003 to the Diamondbacks to complete the trade.
