Biographical Information[edit]

Nielsen Abreu was the youngest of the four Abreu brothers and the only one who never made it to the Venezuelan Winter League. His brother Bobby Abreu was a major league star, while Dennis Abreu won two minor league batting titles and Nelson Abreu made it to the VWL and to A ball in the US.

Nielsen split 2000 between the GCL Phillies (.242/.286/.273 in 24 G) and Batavia Muckdogs (1 for 8), as a backup infielder. In 2001, he hit .275/.304/.321 for the GCL Phillies and fielded .943 as their most-used second baseman. In 2002, his final season, he appeared primarily for Batavia (.257/.327/.286, 14 SB, 8 CS in 41 G as a backup middle infielder) and also got into two games apiece for the Clearwater Threshers (0 AB) and Lakewood BlueClaws (0 for 1).
