Biographical Information[edit]

Nicky Delmonico is the son of college coach Rod Delmonico and the brother of minor leaguer Tony Delmonico. He was a first-team Baseball America high school All-American as a junior. He hit .485 with 18 home runs, 71 RBI and 30 steals in 136 AB and joined Sean Coyle, Manny Machado and Chris Hawkins on the first team.

He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 6th round of the 2011 amateur draft out of a high school in Knoxville, TN. The scout was Adrian Dorsey. He began his professional career in 2012 with the Delmarva Shorebirds of the South Atlantic League where he hit .249/.351/.411 in 95 games, splitting time between first and second base. He hit 22 doubles and 11 homers, scored 49 runs and drove in 54. In 2013, he started the season in the Carolina League with the Frederick Keys. Now playing mostly at third base, he hit .244/.351/.471 in 60 games, with 12 doubles and 13 homers. While his numbers may not have looked overwhelming, he was quite young for the league and had reached advanced class A just over a year after graduating from high school, facts that greatly enhanced his prospect status. It was for this reason that the Milwaukee Brewers insisted on obtaining him in return for veteran reliever Francisco Rodriguez when they traded K-Rod to the Orioles on July 23rd; reports indicated that the Orioles had initially been reluctant to give up the youngster, but that they relented when they realized that a number of other teams were also bidding for Rodriguez's services.

On July 28, 2014, Delmonico was handed a 50-game suspension for testing positive to amphetamines. He was playing for the Brevard County Manatees of the Florida State League at the time.

After making his major league debut with the Chicago White Sox on August 1, 2017, he reached base at least once in his first 13 major league games. One day after the streak ended, on April 18th, he hit two home runs, including an inside-the-park homer in the 8th to lead Chicago to a 4-3 win over the Texas Rangers. Delmonico played for the White Sox through the 2020 major league season. Overall, he played in 158 games and had 574 plate appearances at the Major League level. He slashed .224/.312/.384 with 18 home runs, 17 doubles, 57 RBIs and 62 runs scored. Delmonico finished his playing career in the Cincinnati Reds' minor league system in 2021.

Delmonico always expected to move into coaching once his playing career ended. He returned to the White Sox organization as the hitting coach for the Winston-Salem Dash in 2022 and Birmingham Barons in 2023-2024. After the 2023 season he was a coach for the Glendale Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League.
