Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Nick Fanti was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 31st round in 2015. Following his standout high school career, Fanti quickly impressed in the minors, striking out 11 over 5 1/3 innings while allowing no runs in his first three professional outings with the GCL Phillies in the Gulf Coast League. Fanti finished off his first pro season with a 2.55 ERA in 9 outings. He was even more dominant the following season, posting a 1.57 ERA and 11.3 K/9 in 51 2/3 innings for the rookie affiliate.
Fanti then jumped two levels to the Single-A Lakewood BlueClaws for the 2017 season and continued to be productive. The young hurler threw several gems during the season en route to the South Atlantic League's 3rd best ERA (trailing top prospects Alex Wells and Bryse Wilson) and second best WHIP (trailing only Wells). Among these gems were 8 2/3 innings of a combined no-hitter over the Columbia Fireflies on May 6th and a July 17th masterpiece where he went the distance and allowed just a single baserunner (a walk to Brandon Wagner) while recording a career-best 12 punchouts (including 3 in as many PA's against budding New York Yankees top prospect Estevan Florial). Prior to the 2017 season Fanti also was on the Italian National Team roster at the World Baseball Classic.
Things were downhill from there however, as Fanti started the next season on the disabled list and was off and on it for much of the year. These injuries, combined with a promotion to the Class A-Advanced Clearwater Threshers proved hard to overcome for Fanti, who ended up with a 7.22 ERA in six outings on the year, though most of his trouble occurred in his final outing of the year, which if removed shows a much more palatable 4.82 ERA for the year. Fanti looked to have regained his roll during a stint with the Sydney Blue Sox while playing offseason ball in the Australian Baseball League, but injury issues surfaced again in 2019, causing Fanti to need shoulder surgery and miss the entire year, putting his career in doubt.
