The Newark Little Giants were members of the Eastern League in 1886.

They then played one season in the International League. In 1887 the team went 59-39, the fourth-best record in a league that featured 12 teams during the season. The club from Newark, NJ was just 4 and a half games behind the Toronto Canucks in a close race. Charlie Hackett and Lawrence Murphy both served as managers during that year. The club's top star was African-American pitcher George Stovey, who was 33-14 with a 2.46 ERA and led the IL in wins. The team featured a black catcher as well, in Fleet Walker, who hit .264 and stole 36 bases. 3B John Irwin stole 104 bases in 102 games and OF Bill Annis led the league with 17 triples. The top average was posted by OF John Coogan, who hit .361. The team did not survive a major reshuffling for the 1888 IL.
