"Why, well do I recall Jumbo Critchley and his catcher, Jim Keenan. I used to think this was the best advertised battery in the business." - reminiscence of Billy Murray in Sporting Life, January 18, 1908
"Critchley in his day was a famous pitcher and made one world's record. He pitched and won five games in one day. He also pitched an 18-inning game against the old Allegheny team when he wore the uniform of Auburn, NY." - Sporting Life, March 19, 1910
Morrie Critchley pitched in the majors in 1882. A 32 year old rookie, he split five appearances between the Pittsburgh Alleghenys and St. Louis Browns of the American Association. Critchley was 1-0 with a shutout in his lone Allegheny game and 0-4 with a 4.24 ERA in Missouri. He umpired a total of five games in the AA in 1884 and 1885. After his playing days, he worked in a couple of saloons and started his own saloon and hotel. He was said to have died of heart disease.
