Biographical Information[edit]
Jim Keenan played eleven years in the majors and several seasons in the minors, a long time for a fellow who was primarily a catcher.
Jim was born in New Haven, CT and started in pro ball with the New Haven Elm Citys in 1875. He came back to the majors for some games in 1880 and 1882, but his career took off when he played in the American Association, at the time a major league, during 1884-1889. He finished up his major league days in the National League. He was in Cincinnati from 1885-1891 in two different leagues.
According to an article on March 26, 1883 in the New York Times, Keenan was blacklisted in 1881. He umpired a total of 9 games in the American Association and National League between 1887 and 1893.
He was a Cincinnati, OH city councilman and owned a saloon near the Cincinnati Reds' ballpark.
