Biographical Information

Morgan Murphy played at a time when a catcher's defense was much more important than his hitting. As a result, Murphy was in the major leagues for eleven years in spite of very weak hitting. Even when he hit .275 in 1894 (his best batting average in any year where he had over 100 at-bats), he was well below the league average that year of .309. In 1897, when the league hit .292, he hit .169 but still came back the following year to again hit under .200.

Murphy played in all four of the major leagues that existed during his major league career. He was there for the only season of the Players League (he was managed by King Kelly), the last year of the American Association, the first year of the American League as a major league, and many seasons of the National League. He was also an umpire in the National league for a total of six games between 1886 and 1898.

Murphy was born in Rhode Island, as were his contemporaries Hugh Duffy and Nap Lajoie.
