Montreal Canadiens

From BR Bullpen

Montréal, QC joined the International Association (or International League according to some sources) in 1890 as the Montreal Canadiens. The club was formed on June 2 when the Buffalo Bisons moved there after competition from the Players League forced them to move. The team was only there nine days before moving to Grand Rapids, MI as the Grand Rapids Shamrocks. The Bisons-Canadiens-Shamrocks went 14-29 before the IA folded.

On June 23, the Hamilton Mountaineers moved to the briefly vacant city and took up the Canadiens name as well, playing there for two weeks before the league collapsed. Under manager Jimmy Dean, the Mountaineers-Canadiens were 24-26. 1B Ed Cartwright (.243, .369 SLG) led the league in runs (45) and triples (5), OF Don Casey (.321, .368 SLG) led with 68 hits and OF Abner Powell (.249, .260 SLG) led with 34 steals.

Both Canadiens clubs played their home games at Atwater Park.
