The first professional baseball team in Monroe, NC came into being when the Statesville Indians moved into town on June 20, 1969 and finished the year as the Monroe Indians. Managed by Pinky May, the Cleveland Indians affiliate finished tied for third in the six-team Western Carolinas League at 61-63. They drew 27,570 fans, the fewest in the league, and had no post-season All-Stars. No one on the club had 10 homers or 50 RBI. OF Cecil Rankhorn (.299/~.385/.417, 32 SB in 38 tries) was fifth in the WCL in average. Mike Biko (11-5, Sv, 3.07) was fourth in the loop in ERA and Jim Renfroe (4-2, 2.11) and Bruce Killion (10-8, 5 Sv, 2.55) also did fine jobs on the hill. Tim Irish (9-5, 3.87) was 9th in ERA and played in the league's two All-Star games.
