The Milwaukee Chicks were an expansion AAGPBL team in 1944, managed by Max Carey. They went 30-26 in the first half of the year, but dominated the second half (40-19) and had the best overall record (70-45). They then went on to win the title, beating the Kenosha Comets in the postseason. Ace hurler Connie Wisniewski went 4-1 in the 7-game championship series, pitching two shutouts, 2 1-run games and 1 2-run game. She allowed 21 hits and 2 walks in 45 innings. In the regular season Milwaukee had led the league in runs (492), average (.207), homers (tied for the most, 12) and steals (730, 105 more than the next team). Merle Keagle led the league in homers (7) and total bases (145). The Chicks could not compete financially with the American Association's Milwaukee Brewers and during the Scholarship Series had to play all seven games in Kenosha because the Brewers were using the team's park. The team moved in 1945 to Grand Rapids and became the Grand Rapids Chicks.
