Biographical Information

Mike Renery has pitched in several independent leagues and for the British national team.

After college, Renery joined the 2003 Alexandria Aces, going 0-3 with a 7.99 ERA and a WHIP over 2. In 2005, he was with the Windy City Thunderbolts, where he had a much better 7-8, 4.85 record. He pitched for Great Britain in the 2005 European Championship, striking out 10 in 6 2/3 IP but going 0-1 with a 1.35 ERA, losing a pitching duel against the Ukrainian national team's Evgen Tkachenko. Only Alex Smith (11) had more Ks for Britain.

In 2006, Renery was with the Sussex Skyhawks (0-1, 7 R, 5 H, 5 BB in 3 1/3 IP) and the River City Rascals (0-7, 5.05). He pitched for the 2007 St. George Roadrunners, with a 0-2, 6.61 record and a 2.14 WHIP. His record in the indies now stood at 7-21, 5.82.

For Britain in the 2007 European Championship, Renery started against the Russian national team but had little control - he walked five in 4 1/3 IP. He did fan five and give up just two hits and two runs; Sam Whitehead relieved him and wound up with the win. He pitched another game in those Euros and walked four with four runs in 2/3 IP in a horrendous start versus Sweden; his bullpen saved the team, which won 10-7.

In the 2010 European Championship, he again struggled, giving up nine hits, four walks and eight runs in four innings in his lone start, a loss to eventual champion Italy. During the 2011 European Championship Qualifiers, he was the second of three British hurlers (between Paul Waterman and Brendan Cunliffe) in a 7-0 loss to Israel. He pitched 2 2/3 innings, with four hits, a walk, six whiffs and three runs. Only Stephen Spragg had a worse ERA for Britain in that event. Britain still won to advance to the 2012 European Championship (in which Renery did not play).

Renery played in the Polish Extra League in 2013 on the Warsaw Centaury, a team managed by his former Team GB teammate Aaron Hornostaj. He threw a no-hitter for the Centaury in the final game of the regular season, clinching first place for Warsaw going into the playoffs.

Pitching for Britain in the 2013 European Championship Qualifier, Renery used his knowledge of the Polish players to good effect to beat the Poland national baseball team. He struck out nine in seven innings, allowing seven hits and three runs (2 ER). Britain won that event to get a spot in the 2014 European Championship.
