Biographical Information[edit]

Mike Lyons pitched in the minor leagues, Mexico and the CPBL.

Lyons was drafted by the New York Mets in the 20th round of the 1996 Amateur Draft, and he was 3-2 with a 1.89 ERA for the Kingsport Mets in 1996, striking out 52 in 38 IP. He was 6th in the Appalachian League in appearances and tied for 10th in saves. He collected 14 saves with a 6-2 record and a 1.86 ERA for the Capital City Bombers in 1997. He was 3rd in the Mets chain in saves, trailing Mike Welch and Jose Lisio. Lyons recorded a solid 0.89 ERA in 23 games with 9 saves for the St. Lucie Mets in 1998, and he also had a 3.29 ERA in 29 appearances for the Binghamton Mets (4-1, 5 Sv). He was 4th in the system in saves and only Luis Arroyo pitched more games. He pitched 53 games in Binghamton in 1999, and he had a 4-7 record with a 3.40 ERA. He tied Heath Bell for second in games pitched by a Mets minor leaguer, trailing Mark Guerra. He was 7th in the Eastern League in that department, between Corey Brittan and Dave Hooten. That ended his time in the Mets chain. He did not pitch in 2000-2001, presumably due to injury.

In 2002, Lyons went 7-2 with a 3.29 ERA for the Sioux Falls Canaries . He then signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, and he recorded a 3.38 ERA in 57 games with the Tennessee Smokies in 2003. He tied Gabe Molina for third in their organization in appearances and was third in the Southern League, behind Bryan Gaal and Alan Webb. The Macoto Cobras of Taiwan signed him in 2004, and he was 1-4 with a 2.34 ERA in 7 starts. He was released in the middle of the season, and he returned to the Canaries. Lyons went 8-6 with a 4.05 ERA in 2004, and he was 1-1 with a 6.46 ERA in 2005. He also pitched for the Leones de Yucatan that last year, and he had a 9.00 ERA in 5 games.
