Biographical Information

Mike Hinckley was originally selected by the Montreal Expos out of high school in the 2001 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Darrell Brown and made his pro debut that summer.

Hinckley quickly established himself as one of the top pitching prospects in the organization, posting a sparkling 13-5, 3.14 record in 2003 with the Savannah Sand Gnats and Brevard County Manatees, and following that with an 11-4, 2.77 mark with Brevard County and the AA Harrisburg Senators in 2004. The Expos moved to Washington after that season, and the new Washington Nationals' brass was expecting big things of Hinckley, but it wasn't to be. He started to go in a tailspin, posting a 4.93 ERA with the Class A Potomac Nationals in 2005, and then seeing that ERA rise to 5.53 for the same team the following season. He made it back to AA with Harrisburg in 2007, but his record of 9-10, 5.83, was nothing to write home about. He no longer figured in the Nationals' plans and was moved to the bullpen, where he slowly began to turn things around in 2008. He had a 5-3 record in 26 games for Harrisburg, but with a 5.12 ERA - most of the damage having been done during his six starts. He moved to the AAA Columbus Clippers in mid-year and went 0-2, but with a 3.16 ERA, being used in relief for 19 of his 20 appearances.

On September 2, 2008, Hinckley made his long-delayed debut with the Nationals, pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless relief against the Philadelphia Phillies and made another scoreless appearance against the Phillies the next day.

Hinckley was tied with Eric Gunderson for most appearances without allowing an earned run in a season. In 2008, Hinckley made 14 appearances and didn't allow a run. Their record was broken by Tyler Olson in 2017, when he went 30 appearances without allowing an earned run.
