Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Mike Burrows was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 11th round of the 2018 amateur draft out of a high school in Connecticut. He was signed by scout Eddie Charles. He did not do much that was remarkable in his first two pro seasons, although he did pitch 14 innings without allowing an earned run for the GCL Pirates in 2018. In 2019, he was 2-3, 4.33 in 11 starts for the West Virginia Black Bears of the New York-Penn League, logging just 43 2/3 innings. He then had to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic.
When he returned to action in 2021, he made 13 starts for the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the High-A East, going 2-2, 2.20. He also played in the Arizona Fall League following the season. In 2022, he started the year with the Altoona Curve of the AA Eastern League and managed to secure an invite to pitch for the National League team at the 2022 Futures Game played at Dodger Stadium on July 16th. He was 4-2, 2.94 in 12 starts for Altoona before being promoted to the AAA Indianapolis Indians, where he was 1-4. 5.31 in another 12 games. His 94 1/3 innings that year were almost double his previous personal high, and his 111 strikeouts were another personal high. However, he pitched only twice in 2023, both times as the starter for Indianapolis, throwing 6 2/3 innings with an ERA of 2.70. He then had to undergo Tommy John surgery in April.
He came back in 2024 and given he needed to build back his arm strength after missing a full year, he made stops with the FCL Pirates and Bradenton Marauders before making it back to Indianapolis on July 25th. In 10 games with the Indians, he went 1-1, 4.06 in 37 2/3 innings. As a reward for his hard work, the Pirates called him up to make his debut in the season's penultimate game, on September 28th against the New York Yankees at New Yankee Stadium. He took over for Paul Skenes, who completed an outstanding rookie season with two hitless and scoreless innings, and gave up 2 hits over the next 3 1/3 innings, leading to two runs, but only one of them earned; one of the hits was a solo homer by Jazz Chisholm. He ended up receiving credit for his team's 9-4 win as the Bucs led 6-2 when he left the game and held on until the end.
