Biographical Information

Pitcher Mike Bruhert spent one year in the majors with the New York Mets and a dozen seasons in the minors.

Bruhert began his pro career in 1971 with the Marion Mets. He was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1972 Rule V Draft but returned to the Mets the following spring. With the Jackson Mets in 1975, he posted a 2.63 ERA to lead the Texas League. Bruhert spent almost the entire 1978 season, his only one in the majors, with the Mets. He started 22 times in 27 games and compiled a record of 4-11 with a 4.78 ERA for the last-place team. In the highlight of his big league career, he pitched a 4-hit shutout over the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-0, on September 17th. It was also his only career complete game and came in a month in which he was 1-5, hampering his chance to get another audition at the big league level. In mid-1979, he was traded to the Texas Rangers, along with Bob Myrick, for Dock Ellis. He continued to pitch in the minors through 1982 but never again reached the majors.

After his playing days, Bruhert served as pitching coach for Fordham in the late 1980s and early 1990s, helping groom future major league hurlers Pete Harnisch and Miguel Jimenez.

According to the back of his Topps 1979 Baseball Card (pictured above), Bruhert "is the son-in-law of Gil Hodges, former 1st baseman of Dodgers, manager of Mets." After divorcing her, he married Rosemary Petrillo, and has two sons, Michael Joseph and Joseph Christopher. The family resides in Franklin Square, NY.
