Biographical Information

Miguel Martinez has pitched several seasons in the minors.

Martinez was picked by the Seattle Mariners in the 37th round of the 2001 amateur draft as a draft-and-follow. After signing, he debuted as a pro in 2002; that season, he was with the AZL Mariners (0-2, 4.29) and Everett AquaSox (1-1, 2 Sv, 3.38, 8 H, 24 K in 16 IP).

Miguel was excellent for the 2003 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, with a 1.13 ERA. He went 2-1 with two saves in 24 games, striking out 69 in 55 2/3 innings. Opponents hit just .209 against him. His numbers were similar to the team's other star lefty reliever, Ryan Rowland-Smith.

In 2004, the Puerto Rican southpaw fell to 2-1, 5.62 with five saves for the Inland Empire 66ers. He still struck out 54 in 41 2/3 innings. Martinez split 2005 between the 66ers (1-4, Sv, 7.09, 36 walks in 47 innings, far worse control than his first three seasons) and the independent Lincoln Saltdogs (3 BB, 1 UER in 1 IP).

Pitching for the Puerto Rican national team in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, the Santurce-born portsider allowed six runs in six and 2/3 innings, with six walks and nine hits.

Martinez was 0-4 with a save and a 7.66 ERA for the 2006 Pennsylvania Road Warriors, walking 54 in 47 innings. In 2007, he went 2-3 with a 5.45 ERA for the Coastal Bend Aviators, showing better control than he had for a few years. Miguel spent 2008 with the Edinburg Coyotes and had a 7-5, 5.03 record. He walked 56 in 91 1/3 innings. He remained with Edinburg for 2009 but final statistics were not posted due to a financial conflict between the United Baseball League and Howe Sportsdata, the league statisticians.

Martinez will pitch for Puerto Rico in the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.
