Biographical Information

Miguel Gonzalez was signed as an undrafted free agent by scouts Bill Hughes and Abe Flores for the Anaheim Angels in 2004. He made his pro debut the next summer and pitched in the Angels' system until 2007, when he went 8-4, 3.38 in 30 games for the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League. He then missed the entire 2008 season with a knee injury and was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 2008 Rule V Draft. More health trouble kept him off the mound for all of 2009 and he finally returned to Organized Baseball in 2010 (he had pitched a few times in the Mexican Pacific League in the interim).

In 2010, Gonzalez was 6-4, 4.54 for the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League. In 2011, he was 0-7, 5.40, between three teams - Salem, the AA Portland Sea Dogs and the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox in a season again shortened by injury woes. The Red Sox let him go after the season but he was signed by the Baltimore Orioles after a solid performance in the winter league. He started the 2012 season with the AAA Norfolk Tides and went 3-2, 1.61 in 14 games, giving up only 22 hits in 44 2/3 innings, while striking out 53. He was called up to Baltimore in late May and made his major league debut on May 29th, giving up a run in 3 1/3 innings of relief in an 8-6 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. He was back to stay with the Orioles in early July, then made his first major league start on July 6th, a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for his first major league victory. He stayed in the starting rotation as he continued to pitch well, although the Orioles had him skip a few turns in the rotation to give him additional rest given that he had only pitched more than 100 innings in a season once in his career, back in 2007 before his health problems began. He ended the year at 9-4, 3.25 in 105 1/3 innings. He then started Game 3 of the ALDS against the New York Yankees on October 10th and had a strong start, giving up 1 run on 5 hits in 7 innings, striking out 8 while walking none. The Orioles were leading 2-1 when he left the game, but the Yankees tied the score in the bottom of the 9th and won in the 12th, negating his great performance.

After four seasons with the Orioles, Gonzalez was released at the end of spring training in 2016. He had been roughed up, putting up a 9.78 ERA in 6 starts. He was picked up by the Chicago White Sox and pitched relatively well for them, making 23 starts in 24 appearances and going 5-8, 3.73. He logged 135 innings and struck out 95 batters. He was back with the White Sox in 2017 and started off 3-0 before losing his next five starts. He put an end to that skid with an outstanding performance on May 28th as he did not allow a baserunner to the Detroit Tigers before Andrew Romine and Alex Avila opened the 7th inning with back-to-back singles. He ended up giving up 3 runs in 7 2/3 innings and received credit for a 7-3 win. On August 31st Gonzalez was traded to the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor leaguer Ti'Quan Forbes. He was 7-10, 4.31 in 22 starts for Chicago.
