Michael Wuertz was drafted in the 11th round of the 1997 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Mark Servais and made his pro debut the next summer. Wuertz pitched for eight seasons between the Chicago Cubs (2004-2008) and Oakland A’s (2009-2011), posting a 21-11 record and 11 saves with 444 strikeouts in 426 career relief outings. In 2009, he led all American League relievers with a career-high 102 strikeouts, becoming the third A’s reliever after Hall of Famers Rollie Fingers and Dennis Eckersley to fan 100 in a season.
Wuertz became a pitching coach for the Inland Empire 66ers in 2016-2017, Orem Owlz in 2018, and Inland Empire again in 2019. He was scheduled to return to Inland Empire in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Wuertz was pitching coach of the Rocket City Trash Pandas in 2021-2024.
He also served as the 2016 pitching coach for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League and repeated the effort in 2022.
