Biographical Information[edit]

Mellie Wolfgang pitched five seasons for the Chicago White Sox. He was a sensation in his rookie year, 1914, starting with two shutouts and going 9-5 for the season. He continued to have great ERA's in his next two seasons, 1915 and 1916.

Baseballlibrary.com says he had illness problems in his last two years, and made limited appearances while sometimes pitching batting practice. As a result, he missed pitching in the 1917 and 1919 World Series with the White Sox.

Wolfgang appeared in a handful of contests with the American Association Milwaukee Brewers (aka Panthers) in 1919. He covered the second sack in the Season Opener at Louisville against the Colonels, contributing an assist in the Brewers' 14-2 loss on April 23, 1919. He had no hits in three at-bats facing Dixie Walker.

His first name was Meldon, which was sometimes mistaken to be Milton. Along with Mellie, he was sometimes called Mel. Through 2019, no other major leaguer has been named either Mellie or Meldon or Wolfgang, although there have been four big leaguers with the last name Melton.

"Albany outdid itself last night in welcoming back Mellie Wolfgang, the North End boy, after an absence from the city of six months during which he achieved fame as a member of the Chicago White Sox, winners over the New York Giants in the recent series for the world’s baseball championship." - from an article quoted here [1]
