Biographical Information[edit]

Mel Dalrymple is the brother of Clay Dalrymple and Les Dalrymple. Nicknamed Bush, the lefty pitcher graduated from Chico High in 1946. He still (as of 2009) holds pitching records at Chico State College, now known as Cal State-Chico. Most are from 1949, when he threw 11 complete-game wins in 11 starts.

Mel pitched one year in the minors, with the 1950 Salt Lake City Bees of the Pioneer League (Class C). He was 4-6 with a 5.97 ERA, walking 67 and allowing 99 hits in 89 innings. He threw 10 wild pitches. At the plate, Mel was 3 for 35 with 4 walks and a double. A teammate and friend on the Bees was Hawaiian Wally Yonamine, who went on to the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.

Later, as head baseball coach at both Chico High School and Pleasant Valley High School, Bush instructed future big-league pitchers Nelson Briles and Pat Clements.
