Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop Max Muncy was selected by the Oakland Athletics with the 25th pick of the 1st round of the 2021 amateur draft, out of a high school in California. This came nine years after the A's had drafted another Max Muncy, in the 5th round in the 2012 amateur draft. The two Max Muncys are unrelated but they share a birthday - 12 years apart (the older Max was drafted out of college). His teammates quickly seized on the similarities and nicknamed him "2.0".
Max started his pro career with 11 games for the ACL Athletics in 2021, hitting .129. He got his career started in earnest in 2022 when he played 123 games between the Stockton Ports of the California League and the Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League. He put up a slash line of .229/.336/.422 with 28 doubles, 19 homers, 69 runs and 70 RBIs. The power came after he bulked up during the off-season, filling out his 6' 1" frame under the guidance of specialists with a history of working with pro baseball players. He was named an Athletics organizational All-Star, and repeated the honor in 2023 when he split the season between Lansing and the Midland RockHounds of the Texas League. In another 123 games, he hit .275/.353/.411, with 35 doubles, 10 homers and 62 RBIs. Following the season, he played in the Arizona Fall League and was chosen for the Rising Stars Game, the circuit's All-Star game.
He was a non-roster invitee to major league spring training in 2024 and with the Athletics in full rebuilding mode, was expected to get a chance to make his big league debut in short order. He began the season in AAA with the Las Vegas Aviators, although he also had to go on a rehabilitation assignment with the ACL Athletics. On August 13th, he played a game agaisnt his namesake, who was himself on a rehabilitation assignment with the Los Angeles Dodgers' AAA affiliate, the Oklahoma City Baseball Club.
