Max Schmitz has pitched in the Bundesliga-1, as has his brother Paul Schmitz.

Schmitz debuted with the Bonn Capitals, going 0 for 1 in 2008. In 2009, he hit .197/.346/.227 and fielded .878 with third base as his main position. In the 2009 European Junior Championship, he was 3 for 16 with 3 walks, 4 runs and 3 RBI; he also pitched two shutout innings. In 2010, he hit .230/.358/.310 for Bonn, now playing mostly outfield; he also made his Bundesliga-1 debut as a pitcher, going 2-1 with a 2.30 ERA in six outings. The next year, the teenager batted .232/.338/.319 while dazzling out of the bullpen. He was 3-1 with two saves, a 1.85 ERA, .205 opponent average, 43 strikeouts and 21 walks in 24 1/3 IP. He made the German national team for the first time. In the 2011 World Port Tournament, he was one of Germany's worst hurlers, allowing eight hits, five walks and seven runs (four earned) in 5 1/3 innings while striking out four. He was also with Germany for the 2011 Baseball World Cup.

For the 2012 college season, he enrolled at Georgia State, whose head coach was German team manager Greg Frady.
