Matthew Cooley pitched for the South African national team.
In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, the 18-year-old made one appearance. Relieving Chad Mauritz to close out a loss to champion Cuba, he retired Michel Enríquez. Yuli Gurriel took him deep then he got Joan Carlos Pedroso to end the contest. [1] He also pitched once in the 2007 Baseball World Cup, facing Mexico. Taking over for Gavin Jeffries in the 7th with a 10-3 deficit, he pitched a shutout inning with one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Llewellyn Gerber relieved him in the 8th. His 0.00 ERA led the team; Robert Verschuren was next at 5.14. [2]
