Matteo Modica debuted in Italy's top level with Nettuno in 2006, allowing 11 runs (9 earned) on 14 hits in 8 2/3 IP for his hometown team; he took a loss in his only decision. He spent the next five summers in the Italian minor leagues. In the 2011 Italian Series, Modica was called on for game six after having not appeared in either the regular season or playoffs. He entered with Nettuno leading T&A San Marino 3 games to 2, a 2-2 tie, the bases loaded and one out, relieving Carlos Pezzullo. He did not fare well, allowing a single to Mattia Reginato to put San Marino ahead for good. Anthony Granato hit into a run-scoring force, then Giovanni Pantaleoni singled for a 5-2 lead. Another Matteo, former Reds farmhand Matteo Pizziconi, replaced Modica. Nettuno went on to drop game seven as well.
