Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Mason Fox was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 21st round of the 2018 amateur draft, out of Gardner-Webb University. He was a two-way player in college and in fact was mainly an outfielder his first two years before starting to pitch during his sophomore season. The mound was not entirely foreign territory for him, though, as he had also pitched in high school. As a junior, he batted .321 in 58 games and had a 6.07 ERA as a starting pitcher, but the Padres saw his future as being on the mound, and he was exclusively a pitcher in the minor leagues.
He began his pro career in 2018 as a reliever for the AZL Padres 2 and really started emerging as a prospect in 2019, when he went 3-0, 0.55 with 4 saves in 24 games, starting in short-season A ball, and rising up two levels by the end of the year, to the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League. He then sat out the 2020 season when the Coronavirus pandemic shut down the minor leagues, and was all out of whack when he resumed pitching in 2021. He put up an ERA of 11.57 in AAA and 10.92 in AA, and the Padres had to send him back down to the Arizona League to work things out. His stuff was good, with 48 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings, but he also walked 25 batters and gave up 51 hits. In 2022, he began the season in Class A with the Fort Wayne TinCaps and after a couple of convincing outings was back in AA with the San Antonio Missions. On May 18th, he completed a combined no-hitter against the Midland RockHounds by pitching the 9th inning of the 4-0 win, after Ryan Lillie, Michel Báez and Osvaldo Hernandez had got things started. Remarkably, this was the second such no-hitter in three games for the Missions, as on May 15th, four other pitchers had also combined to pitch a no-hitter.
