Biographical Information[edit]

Cuban-born pitcher Osvaldo Hernández was signed by the San Diego Padres as an international amateur free agent on March 13, 2017. He began his professional career that same year with the AZL Padres 1 and pitched for three other teams before the season was over, the AZL Padres 2, the Tri-City Dust Devils and the Fort Wayne TinCaps. He had a very good season for Fort Wayne in 2018, going 11-4, 1.81 in 21 games including 19 starts. He struck out 94 batters against 27 walks in 109 2/3 innings and was named to the Midwest League post-season All-Star team.

His 2019 season was ruined by injuries, as he went 0-2, 3.38 in 14 games but only pitched 32 1/3 innings, mainly for the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League. He then had to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic. When he returned in 2021, it was with the AA San Antonio Missions, for whom he made 22 starts and went 4-8, 5.11, pitching 100 1/3 innings. He was back with San Antonio at the start of 2022, but was moved to the bullpen after a couple unsuccessful starts that saw hom give up 9 earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. He pitched a whole lot better in his new role, and on May 18th he was part of history when he pitched 2 innings in a combined no-hitter against the Midland RockHounds. Succeeding starter Ryan Lillie and fellow Cuban Michel Báez, he pitched the 7th and 8th innings before turning the ball over to Mason Fox, who completed the feat. Only three days earlier, on May 15th, four other Missions pitcher had also combined on a no-hitter.
