Biographical Information[edit]
Masayuki Hasegawa pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 14 years.
Hasegawa was drafted by the Hiroshima Carp in the first round of the 1995 NPB draft, and he spent his first three seasons in the NPB Farm Leagues, only pitching 3 games combined with the big club.[1] He had a 5.96 ERA in 10 relief outings in 1999, then his ERA was 3.13 in 10 games in 2000. Hasegawa entered the rotation in 2001, and he was 9-6 with a 3.22 ERA. He then improved to 13-10 with a 3.84 ERA in 2002, and he led the Central League in hits allowed with 212. He also ranked 4th in wins (3 behind Koji Uehara and Kevin Hodges), 4th in strikeouts (between Shugo Fujii and Kimiyasu Kudo), 4th in losses (tied with Hiroki Kuroda, Daisuke Miura and Chris Holt) and 6th in innings (between Fujii and Yuji Yoshimi).
The Ibaraki native suffered from a tonsillitis in 2003, so he only had a 2-10 record with a 5.29 ERA. He tied Yoshimi for 5th in losses. Hasegawa then had a right hand injury in 2004, and he only pitched 4 games. He was used as a swingman in 2005, and he was 2-10 with a 6.49 ERA while leading the league with 9 wild pitches. Thus, he was turned into a full-time reliever in 2006, and he record a 3.95 ERA in 29 appearances. Returning to the rotation in 2007, Hasegawa bounced back and had a 5-5 with a 2.95 ERA. However, he slumped to 3-6 with a 6.94 ERA in 2008, and he only pitched 10 games in 2009. The Carp then traded him with Go Kida to the Orix Buffaloes for Yuichiro Mukae on May 17, 2010, but he only pitched 6 more games for Orix then he announced his retirement in 2011.[2]
Overall, Hasegawa was 42-61 with a 4.44 ERA, struck out 688 and pitched 900 1/3 innings in 14 years in NPB. His repertoire featured a fastball that peaks at 95 mph, a forkball, curveball and a shuuto.
