Biographical Information[edit]

Martin Almstetter has pitched for the German national team from 2001-2008.

Almstetter debuted in Bundesliga in 2000. In the 2001 European Championship, he allowed 3 runs in 6 innings. In Bundesliga in 2002, he was 10-1 with a save and a 2.84 ERA. He led his division in innings pitched (76) while working for the Regensburg Legionäre and was second in wins and 4th in ERA.

Almstetter was excellent in 2003, going 9-1 with a 1.41 ERA and allowing only 48 hits in 70 1/3 innings. He easily led the southern division in ERA, was 5th in strikeouts (64), 4th in wins and 2nd in fewest base runners allowed per inning. In the 2003 European Championship, Martin had a 4.05 ERA as Germany's third-best hurler; he led the staff with 13 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings.

Almstetter fell to 5-3, 1.78 in 2004. He was 4th in the south in ERA, tied for 5th in wins and allowed the lowest average (.185). He was 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in the 2004 European B-Pool Championships. In 2005, the southpaw was 8-3 with a 3.92 ERA in Bundesliga, tying for third in the south in wins but no longer showing up at the top of the leaderboards. In the 2005 European Championship, Martin was 1-0 with a 2.03 ERA, despite 8 walks in 13 1/3 innings.

Almstetter had a 3-0, 4.24 record in 2006. The next year, his ledger read 7-0, 2.66. He was 4th in the south in ERA and tied for 5th in wins. He did not play in the 2007 European Championship. In the 2007 Baseball World Cup, he pitched one game, allowing 9 hits, 4 walks, 2 hit batsmen and 6 runs in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to Team Canada.

In the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament, the national team veteran allowed no hits in 3 2/3 innings but walked 3 and allowed one run in two relief appearances. He struggled in the 2008 European Cup in Regensburg, going 1-1 with a 0.00 ERA but allowing 7 unearned runs in 10 2/3 IP and giving lots of baserunners.

Almstetter was 4-4 with a 2.47 ERA in the 2008 Bundesliga season. He finished sixth in ERA (between Nils Hartkopf and Manuel Möller) and 6th in WHIP (1.12). In '09, he fell to 4-1, 4.19 and then went 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA in the postseason.

In the 2009 Baseball World Cup, the portsider allowed 3 runs in 4 1/3 IP, all versus eventual champion Team USA. All the offense came on homers, a 2-run shot by Buck Coats and a solo job by Justin Smoak.

Almstetter moved to the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe for 2010, expected to be used in relief behind Markus Winkler and former major leaguer Dusty Bergman.
