Biographical Information[edit]

Markus Melendez has played in the Elitserien and Bundesliga and for the Swedish national team.

Melendez hit .230 as a college freshman, .374/.463/.504 as a sophomore, .246/.388/.292 in an off-year as a year and .324/.435/.439 as a senior. [1] He was All-New England Collegiate Conference at catcher. [2] Possessing Swedish citizenship as well, he went on to play in Sweden in 2020. [3]

In the 2020 Elitserien, he batted .310/.442/.483 for the champion Sölvesborg Firehawks. He tied Leo Bäckström for 9th in the league in runs (16), tied Joe Wittig and Ben Johnson for 4th in RBI (17) and was 4th with 12 walks (between Terrell Joyce and Max Hill in the COVID-19-shortened season. [4] He moved to Germany's Ulm Falcons for 2021, hitting .312/.426/.506. [5] He then represented Sweden in the 2021 European Championship. He singled off Boris Bokaj of the Czech national team in his first at-bat and was driven in by Daniel Johnson but it was the only Swedish run that day. He later had a 3-run game in a win over Greece. For the 2021 Euros, he batted .375/.412/.500 with five runs in six games while handling 31 chances error-free at catcher and first base. He tied Joel Johnson for the Swedish lead in runs in the event, tied Nicklas Melin for the best slugging on the team and was 3rd in OPS (behind Melin and Per Sjörs). [6]
