Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Mark Mangum was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the first round of the 1997 amateur draft, out of high school, with the 18th overall pick. He played in the minor leagues from 1997 to 2002, peaking at AA.
He spent only one season in the Rockies system, going 4-6, 4.80 in 14 starts for the AZL Rockies after being drafted. On June 5, 1998, just before the start of short-season A ball that year, he was sent to the Montreal Expos to complete the trade of December 10th of the previous year that had sent Ps Dave Veres and Mark Hamlin to Colorado in exchange for OF Terry Jones and a player to be named later. He spent that season with the Vermont Expos of the New York-Penn League, going 3-9, 4.46 in 14 games (12 starts).
Mangum had a solid season with the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League in 1999, going 10-11, 3.50 in 26 starts, with 106 strikeouts in 159 1/3 innings. It looked at that point like he was going to fulfill his promise, but his next two seasons with the Harrisburg Senators of the AA Eastern League did not show any further improvement. In 2000 , he was 7-8, 4.52 in 26 starts but only registered 59 Ks in 140 1/3 innings, then in 2001 he was 7-5, 4.15 in 18 games (11 starts), with a slightly better (but still insufficient) strikeout rate of 40 in 80 innings. It's not clear why he never pitched professionally again after that season.
After his career, he went to college, having skipped it to turn pro, obtaining his degree from Texas A&M. He then turned to coaching youth baseball and in 2013 was named Director of Youth Programs for Twelve Baseball in College Station, TX, a position he still occupied as of 2022.
