Biographical Information[edit]

Mark "Carv" Carvalho has been a college coach for 28 years, 17 as a head coach and 11 as an assistant. A summer coach for youth and college for 15 years.

He has been part of eight collegiate championships as a head and assistant coach.

As a player, Carvalho was two-year letterman at Arkansas City High School in Kansas. He was mainly a third baseman who pitched in relief for the Bulldogs.

After high school, Carvalho stayed in Arkansas City and played at Cowley County Community College under Tiger legendary coach, Ben Cleveland. He played mainly at third base, pitched and showed versatility by playing some outfield and second and first base positions. He was a team captain his sophomore season with the Tigers.

He went on to Wichita State University, being part of Head Coach Gene Stephenson's first recruiting class. Injuries prevented him from finishing his baseball career with the Shockers, but he did end up getting his undergraduate and Masters degrees at WSU.

Carvalho was assistant coach at Friends University from 1986-1991 then was head coach from 1997-2006, going 237-169. He was named Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Louisville Slugger Regional Coach of the Year as well as Rawlings Baseball Coach of the Year in 2004 when the Falcons set a school record for wins (38) and were a game away from the NAIA World Series.

He was Associate Head Coach and hitting coach at Bethany College where the Swedes led the nation in hitting at .382 and were KCAC Champions.

Coach Carv became the head coach of Kansas Wesleyan University for the 2009-2010 season. In the 2010 season, the Coyotes, picked seventh in the KCAC preseason polls, won the KCAC Tournament and advanced to the National Tournament in Mississippi.

In the 2011 season, KWU won both the KCAC League Championship and the Tournament and advanced to the National Tournament again in Lubbock, TX. They lost the championship game to Lubbock Christian University, who ended up being the NAIA World Series runner-up.

Carvalho was named the Coach of the Year for the 2011 season, both in the KCAC and in Region.

His record through five years at Kansas Wesleyan was 150-112 and overall it is 397-249. He was the holder of the most wins by any head coach in KCAC Baseball history for many seasons (eventually broken by Tabor College's Mark Standiford).

He left Kansas Wesleyan in 2014 and returned to Friends University as Assistant Coach/Hitting and Recruiter from 2015 to 2020. As hitting coach he had the honor of having two players finish back-to-back 1st team NAIA All-America in John Gardner and Augie Isaccson.

Coach Carv also was the Head Softball Coach at Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School from 2015-2017 where his teams finished in third place twice and tied for second in the GWCL City League. His overall record at KMC was 43-22.

He also has been involved as a GM/Coach for summer baseball teams in the Walter Johnson Baseball League, the Sunflower Collegiate League, and the Jayhawk Collegiate Summer League, located in Kansas, since 1997.

The teams' names have changed (Firebirds, Rattlers, Team Elite, Elite-Sluggers, Salina Blue Jays, the North Central Kansas Knights and now the Newton Rebels since 2015), but they have been successful with making the National Baseball Congress World Series for six summers.

His Newton Rebels team placed 7th in the 2015 National Baseball Congress World Series and the Rebels were named the Outstanding Offensive Hitting Team of the Series. The Newton Rebels finished 2-1 in pool play in the 2018 NBC Series.

He has been an assistant coach with the Cheney Diamand Dawgs in the NBC World Series, 2019-2022.

Was named Head Coach of the Southwestern (KS) Moundbuilders on May 24, 2023. He recieved his 400th career win as a collegiate Head Coach on March 22, 2024 against the University of Saint Mary.

Coach Carv has coached teams that represented the Team USA in Belgium, Aruba (twice) and Hawaii (twice).

He is also a color commentator for the Newton Sluggin' Rebels broadcasts as well as working several NBC World Series games throughout the years.

Carvalho has worked years in the media with TV, radio and photo/journalist. He worked at KAKE-TV, KSNW-TV and KSOK, KKRD and KMUW radio stations and with the Associated Press.
