At age 34, Marcel Vogels was the oldest player of the Belgian national team in the 1978 Amateur World Series, their first appearance in an Amateur World Series. He was 3 years older than Willy Lagrilliere, the next-oldest. He was 1 for 6 with a walk and had 10 putouts and an error, backing up Philippe Kleinjans in right and Albert De Lannoy in left. He also pitched one game, allowing 7 hits, 3 walks and 8 runs (only 4 earned) in 5 innings, fanning two. His 7.20 ERA was second on the team, .45 behind Marc Arnouts and 1.80 ahead of #3 Marcel de Saedeleer. He later was an umpire, working the 1986 B-Level European Championship.
