Luisgardo Alvarez hit .366/.435/.473 for Santa Maria in the 2008 Curacao league. He finished 5th in average and 2nd in RBI (18). He had eight doubles in 23 games, finishing second in the circuit in two-baggers. He also scored 25 times, tying Quincy Ascencion for third. In the 2008 Haarlem Baseball Week, he hit .313/.313/.313 to finish third on the Antilles/Aruba squad in average, behind Randolph Kirindongo and Andley Simmons.

In the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup, Alvarez was 1 for 21 with a walk and a double, easily outhit by outfield mates Ardley Jansen and Lorvin Louisa, both former US minor leaguers. The Dutch Antilles won a spot in the 2009 Baseball World Cup.

Alvarez kept it up in the 2009 Curacao league, batting .390/.464/.532 with 17 runs in 19 games. He won the batting title, was second in slugging and third in OBP. He tied for third in runs. Alvarez then was put on the Netherlands Antilles roster for the 2009 World Cup.

He also played in the 2010 South American Games.
