Biographical Information[edit]
Lefthanded pitcher Luis Ysla was signed as an amateur free agent by the San Francisco Giants before the 2013 season. Unusual for a player from Venezuela, he was already 21 at the time. He was assigned to the AZL Giants to begin his pro career and was 4-0, 2.65 in 12 starts. he also had a solid 52/13 K/W ratio in 51 innings, In 2014, he moved up to the Augusta GreenJackets of the South Atlantic League and had another good season, going 6-7, 2.45 in 24 games (23 starts). he logged 121 1/3 innings, gave up only 104 hits and struck out 115. He led the SAL in ERA.
Things were a bit tougher with the San Jose Giants of the California League in 2015, as his ERA shot up to 6.21 in 33 games. He made only 9 starts and pitched 79 2/3 innings but managed to give up 109 hits and walk 41 batters. He did strike out 95 opponents, showing he still had some zip, but his 3-6 record was indicative of his struggles. Still, given his previous success, the Boston Red Sox took a flyer on him, acquiring him from the Giants on August 31st in return for major league outfielder Alejandro De Aza. He finished the year by logging 5 scoreless innings for the Salem Red Sox. He then split the 2016 season between the Portland Sea Dogs of the Eastern League and the Pawtucket Red Sox of the International League, reaching both AA and AAA for the first time. He went a combined 2-5, 3.99 with 4 saves in 40 games. However, he regressed in 2017, as he was just 1-5, 5.05 in 29 games for Portland. On July 29th he was sold to the Los Angeles Dodgers after having been designated for assignment. He finished the year with the Tulsa Drillers in the Texas League, where he had a 6.17 ERA in 7 games.
On April 2, 2018, he was on the move again, being traded to the Baltimore Orioles in return for fellow minor league hurler Jesus Liranzo. He was assigned to the Bowie BaySox of the Eastern League.
