Luis Rico was a utility infielder for the Bolivian national team in the 2013 Bolivarian Games; the teenager was 0 for 6 with five whiffs and was caught stealing; he had 3 errors in 7 total chances. He allowed one hit in one inning pitched as well. He was 1 for 5 with two walks, a hit-by-pitch and three runs in the 2016 South American Championship and had one error in two chances. He led Bolivia in runs despite his part-time role; Sekai Miyamae was their only other player with more than one. He was 0-1 on the hill, allowing 11 hits and 9 walks in 4 2/3 IP with a 27.00 ERA. He took the loss against eventual champion Brazil. He was 5th on the 8-man staff in ERA as they gave up lots of runs.

Rico played third, left and pitched for Bolivia in the 2018 South American Championship. He was 0 for 4 with a walk on offense. In two games pitched (Marco Davalos was their only other hurler to work more than one), he allowed 18 hits, 12 walks and 24 runs (21 earned) in 7 1/3 IP. He lost the opener to Gold Medal winner and host Argentina and also dropped one to Bronze Medal winner Chile. He was 4th on a 6-man staff in ERA this time, finishing ahead of Gabriel Orias and Yausmel Alfaro.
