Biographical Information[edit]

Luis Ramos has pitched in the minors and for the Panamanian national team.

Ramos signed by Boston Red Sox scouts Todd Claus and Ronaldo Pino in 2012. That summer, he struggled in his pro debut with the DSL Red Sox at 0-3, 9.90 in nine games. He was much better the next year with the same team, going 5-3 with a 2.04 ERA and only 4 walks allowed in 57 1/3 IP. In the pitcher-friendly Dominican Summer League, he did not make the top ten in ERA; his .82 WHIP was only third on his club. He came stateside in 2014 with the GCL Red Sox and continued to do well (4-3, 2.93, 7 BB in 43 IP). [1] He slumped in 2015 with the Greenville Drive (3-3, 7.12 in 7 G) and Lowell Spinners (1-1, 4.89 in 8 G), allowing 97 hits in 69 innings to end his career in the minors at 13-13, 4.17 in 48 games (28 starts).

Ramos got one start for Panama when they won Silver in the 2017 Central American Games, facing eventual Bronze Medal winner El Salvador. He pitched five shutout innings but carried just a 1-0 lead into the 6th as Jairo Aparicio was containing Panama fairly well. He struggled in the 6th, getting one out before Anfernee Benítez took over and getting charged with three runs. While he allowed only two hits and three walks in his 5 1/3 IP while whiffing seven, he thus was in position for the loss, but Panama rallied in the 8th and 9th to give him a no-decision. [2]

The lefty pitched four shutout innings of relief to beat Mexico in the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games. He had 5 2/3 shutout innings for the tourney, as he and Gabriel Ramos formed an excellent Ramos pitching pitching duo for the team. [3] He was on Panama's team in the 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier but did not get into a game. [4]

He was 0-3 with a 5.20 ERA for the Bravos de Margarita in the 2019-2020 Venezuelan Winter League and allowed one unearned run in one inning for the Astronautas de Chiriquí in the 2020 Caribbean Series. He was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA for the Águilas Cibaeñas in the 2021-2022 Dominican League. During the 2022 Caribbean Series, he struggled, allowing three hits and a walk in a third of an inning for the Astronautas de Los Santos, striking out one. He was on Panama's team in the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers but did not get into a game as his staffmates pitched back-to-back shutouts to send Panama to the 2023 World Baseball Classic, their first World Baseball Classic in 14 years.
