Biographical Information

Luis Exposito made it to the big leagues in 2012.

He was taken by the Boston Red Sox as a draft-and-follow pick in the 31st round of the 2005 amateur draft. After a season of junior college, he was signed by scout Jon Lukens for $150,000 and made his debut in 2006.

Exposito spent 2006 with the Lowell Spinners, hitting .250/.301/.327 as their primary catcher. He was suspended by the Red Sox for a lack of maturity and as a result only played 9 games for the 2007 Greenville Drive, going 7 for 30 with two walks. He split 2008 between Greenville (.283/.328/.508, 11 HR, 31 RBI, 34 R in 49 G) and the Lancaster Jethawks (.301/.331/.509, 10 HR, 37 RBI in 55 G in the regular season, then .297 in 9 postseason games). He was 7th in the Red Sox chain in dingers.

In 2009, Luis was with the Salem Red Sox (.271/.329/.424 in 76 G) and Portland Sea Dogs (.337/.371/.489 in 23 G), hitting 29 doubles overall. He then batted .314 in 14 games in the Arizona Fall League. With Portland for all of 2010, the Miami native produced at a .260/.339/.416 clip with 39 doubles and 94 RBI. He was 4th in the Eastern League in doubles (behind Ryan Adams, Steve Singleton and Thomas Neal) and 3rd in RBI (behind Eric Thames and Joel Guzmán). Only Ryan Lavarnway and Anthony Rizzo had more RBI in the Boston system. He led EL catchers in assists (95) and passed balls (140 despite spending 40 games at DH. He was not named the EL All-Star catcher as that honor went to Hector Gimenez. He went 6 for 46 with the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican League.

Exposito was called up twice by the by the Red Sox in 2011. He was called up the first time on June 8 before being demoted on June 10 without appearing in a game. Due to a minor injury to Jason Varitek, Exposito was recalled again on September 26, 2011. He spent the remainder of the season with the team but did not get into a game. In the minors with Pawtucket in 2011, Luis struggled at .242/.298/.367.

In 2012, Exposito began with Pawtucket, going 2 for 10 with two doubles and a walk. He was placed on waivers and claimed by the Baltimore Orioles. After 10 games with the Norfolk Tides (.310/.356/.429), he was called up to the majors for the third time, replacing the injured Nolan Reimold on the roster. He made his MLB debut in a 13-inning contest, coming in as the catcher in the 12th after Ronny Paulino had been yanked for a pinch-hitter. He flew out against Scott Atchison of the Red Sox in his lone at-bat and Baltimore won, 6-4.
