Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Luis De Los Santos was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as an international amateur free agent on July 2, 2015. He played his first professional season in 2016 with the DSL Blue Jays, hitting .291 in 52 games.
Over the next several years, he climbed slowly and steadily up the organizational ladder, although he was never considered a top prospect. He changed teams many times, as his very good fielding skills made him a good candidate to help out a team at a higher level that had an infielder unavailable for a brief spell. Thus, he made it briefly to Class A with the Lansing Lugnuts at age 19 in 2017, and to High A with the Dunedin Blue Jays in 2019, although he was mainly playing in Rookie Class in 2017 and 2018, and in Short-season Class A in 2019.
After being forced to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to action in 2021 with the Vancouver Canadians of what was called that season only the High-A West. He hit .253/.297/.426 in 91 games. In 2022, he was mainly with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats of the AA Eastern League, but also saw action briefly in AAA with the Buffalo Bisons. His combined slash line was .257/.314/.385 in 117 games, with 10 homers and 57 RBIs. In 2023, he was with the same two teams, although he spent most of his time with Buffalo. In 86 games, his line was .230/.332/.384 with 8 homers and 51 RBIs.
He was with the major league Blue Jays in spring training in 2024, although he was well down on the infield depth chart, with Bo Bichette, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Ernie Clement and a couple of others ahead of him at the major league level, and Orelvis Martinez and Leo Jimenez in front of him in AAA. But the cards all kept falling with Bichette and Kiner-Falefa getting injured, and the latter being traded, Martinez being suspended for a positive PED test, leaving Clement and Jimenez to man shortstop in the majors. The major league Blue Jays found themselves needing an extra infielder after making a flurry of trades at the trading deadline and called up Luis on July 30th. At the time, he was hitting .243 in 28 games at Buffalo, after having been out with a broken hand from mid-May to late July, only returning to action on July 23rd. He made his debut as a defensive substitute at third base in the 8th inning of a game against the Baltimore Orioles on July 31st, and grounded out against Burch Smith in his first big league at-bat.
