Biographical Information[edit]

Luis Borroto has been a top pitcher in Cuba at times.

Borroto debuted in 2001-2002 for Villa Clara, going 7-4 with a 3.12 ERA as a rookie. He fell to 6-5, 4.65 in 2002-2003 but averaged nearly a strikeout per inning.

Luis had his big year in 2003-2004 with a 12-3, 1.49 record and 135 strikeouts in 126 2/3 innings, allowing only 96 hits. The right-hander led the Cuban Serie Nacional in ERA (.60 ahead of runner-up Danny Betancourt) and strikeouts and was one win behind leader Carlos Alberto Yánes, losing out on a pitching Triple Crown. Borroto then led the 2004 Súper Liga with a 1.25 ERA for the Centrales.

Borroto pitched for the Cuban national team in the 2004 Olympics. He was one of the top hurlers on the Gold Medal winners, with no runs and 8 K in 8 1/3 IP, going 2-0. Only Adiel Palma won more games for Cuba. He tied Hiroki Kuroda and Chris Oxspring for the lowest ERA in the '04 Summer Games and tied Kuroda, Wei-Lun Pan, Tsuyoshi Wada, Oxspring and Ryan Rowland-Smith for second in wins behind Palma.

Luis backslid in 2004-2005 to go 12-5 with a 3.02 ERA for Villa Clara; he allowed 107 hits and fanned 142 in 131 1/3 IP. He was one K behind Palma, the league leader. He was one win behind co-leaders Ciro Licea and Pedro Luis Lazo.

Borroto improved to 11-5, 2.45 in 2005-2006 with a league-high 117 strikeouts. He was only .16 behind ERA leader Noelvis Hernández and was once more a win behind the leaders, Yánes and Lazo. In the 2006 World Baseball Classic, he was one of Cuba's worst hurlers, with 4 runs and 2 homers in only 3 1/3 IP and a 0-1 record. Only Yosvany Perez had a worse ERA for the Cubans. He gave up two two-run homers in the loss to Puerto Rico, to Bernie Williams and Alex Cintron.

Borroto fell to 5-5, 3.29 in 2006-2007 and was 4-2 with a 3.25 ERA and 62 K in 52 2/3 IP in 2007-2008. His career record at that point was 57-29, 2.91 with 676 K and 554 H in 661 2/3 IP.

At age 26 in 2008-2009, the Villa Clara hurler was 4-3 with a 5.09 ERA for his worst season yet though he still struck out over a batter per inning. He rebounded to go 9-1 with a 3.79 ERA in 2009-2010. He fanned 85 in 95 innings to tie for 8th in whiffs and led the league in winning percentage.
