Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Leif McKinley played in the Boston Red Sox minor league system from 1992 to 1994 and then in the independent leagues in 1995 and 1996. He was taken by the Red Sox in the 21st round of the 1992 amateur draft, a few picks after outfielder Danny Perez.

Perhaps McKinley's best year in affiliated ball was 1993, when he posted a 4.23 ERA in 21 games for the Utica Blue Sox. His first year in the independent ranks, 1995, was quite good, too - converting to starting pitching, McKinley went 10-6 with a 3.57 ERA in 21 games (20 starts) for the Bend Bandits.

Overall, he was 17-16 with a 4.49 ERA in 114 games (26 starts) over five seasons.

He died in on February 16, 2002 after being "lost at sea." He died in a boating accident on Netarts Bay in Oregon.
