Biographical Information

Outfielder L.J. Hoes reached the majors with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012.

Selected by the Orioles in the third round of the 2008 amateur draft, Hoes was signed by scout Dean Albany. He made his debut that year with the GCL Orioles, hitting .308 with 3 triples, 36 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases.

Hoes reached the majors as a September call-up in 2012, making his debut on September 25th, against the Toronto Blue Jays with the Orioles in a neck-and-neck pennant race with the New York Yankees. He appeared as a pinch runner for Jim Thome in that game, and the following day, he got his first at-bat, grounding out while pinch hitting for Nate McLouth. Those were his only two appearances of the year. He played only once for the Orioles in 2013, going 0 for 3 in a start in left field on July 28th, before being traded to the Houston Astros on July 31st, along with P Josh Hader, in return for P Bud Norris. The Astros immediately made him a starter, though, and he hit .287 with a homer and 10 RBI in 46 games, scoring 24 runs. He was the starting LF on Opening Day on April 1, 2014. In his first at-bat of the year, he hit as solo homer against the New York Yankees' CC Sabathia, contributing to a 6-2 Astros win. However, he was unable to hang on to the starting job, as he hit only .172 in 55 games in 122 at-bats and he was pushed aside by a wealth of young outfielders coming up through the Astros' system, including George Springer, Jake Marisnick and Robbie Grossman. In 2015, he played only 5 games for the newly competitive Astros, going 4 for 15 (.267). He spent the bulk of the year with the AAA Fresno Grizzlies, where he hit .295/.383/.400 in 99 games. On November 24th, the Astros sold his contract back to the Orioles.
