Biographical Information[edit]

Kyle Smith pitched in the minors for two years.

Smith was 4-2 with a 3.84 ERA as a college freshman and 9-1, 5.76 as a sophomore, leading the Mid-American Conference in wins. He had a 4-2, 4.79 record as a junior. Baseball America was projecting him as a 2nd-to-4th round pick at one point that year but arm injuries caused his stock to plummet. The Cleveland Indians wound up taking him in the 20th round of the 2009 amateur draft; Junie Melendez was the scout. He wasn't even the first Kyle Smith taken by the Indians in 2009 as infielder Kyle Smith was picked in the 14th round. Both Kyle Smiths wound up with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. This one went 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA. In 2010, he moved to relief and struck out 46 in 31 2/3 IP (third-best K rate among New York-Penn League relievers) and allowed a .202 average but also walked 26. He never played again. He was assistant pitching coach for Kent State in 2012 and was pitching coach for Malone University in 2013 and University of Akron in 2014-2015. He then left baseball and went into sales [1].
