Biographical Information[edit]

Kyle Smith was a minor league infielder for three years.

He hit .279/.319/.343 as a college freshman, .250/.337/.354 as a sophomore and .332/.430/.495 with 50 runs in 58 games as a junior. He tied for 7th in the Big West Conference with 28 walks. The Cleveland Indians took him in the 14th round of the 2009 amateur draft, 6 rounds before another Kyle Smith, who would be his teammate that summer. The scout for this Kyle Smith was Vince Sagisi. Smith hit .242/.336/.279 for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and stole 8 bases in 8 tries; he fielded .966 as their main shortstop. He split 2010 between the Lake County Captains (.246/.313/.326 in 103 G as a backup middle infielder) and Columbus Clippers (3 for 10, BB). In 2011, he appeared for Lake County (6 for 33, 2 2B, 2 BB), the Kinston Indians (0 for 9, BB) and Columbus (1 for 5, 3 R).

Smith had played 178 games in the minor leagues, hitting .238/.316/.300 with 65 runs, 39 RBI and 12 steals in 13 tries. He struck out in 158 of 600 at-bats and fielded .962 at SS and .979 at 2B, also seeing action at 3B, 1B and LF.
