Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Kyle McCann is the son of minor league pitcher Joe McCann. He made his major league debut with the Oakland Athletics in the early days of the 2024 season as the back-up for starting backstop Shea Langeliers. He was involved in a very rare play on June 26th when in the 2nd inning of a game against the Los Angeles Angels, he lost an apparent run scored and was called out on interference due to a rare sequence of events. He was at first base with teammate Armando Alvarez on second when Max Schuemann hit a double. Alvarez scored easily, but McCann stumbled on his way to home plate and missed touching it as a result. Alvarez pointed this out to him, but in doing so helped to steady McCann and to turn him around, so when he did touch the plate, home plate umpire John Bacon called him out on baserunner interference by Alvarez - a call that is exceedingly rare. The A's went on to lose the game, 5-2. On July 6th, he was involved in another strange occurrence, when he homered off his namesake James McCann - also a catcher. James was pitching 8th-inning mop-up relief for his team, the Baltimore Orioles as the A's were setting a season-high for hits, and Kyle, pinch-hitting for teammate Brent Rooker, hit a two-run blast as Oakland went on to win the game, 19-8.
