Biographical Information[edit]
Kyle Bradish made his major league debut with the Baltimore Orioles at the end of April in 2022. He had been drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 4th round of the 2018 amateur draft and was one of four players traded to the Birds in return for P Dylan Bundy in December 2019. Of that quartet, only Isaac Mattson had reached the majors, albeit very briefly the previous year, at the time Kyle made his first start on April 29th.
Kyle's first outing in the big leagues went relatively well even though he was charged with a 3-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox, as he gave up 3 runs, one of them unearned, in six innings. He recorded his first win on May 10th, with 7 innings of two-run ball in which he walked none and struck out 11 in a 5-3 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals. That start gave an indication of his potential, but overall, he found the early going tough, as after 10 starts on June 18th, he was 1-3 with an ERA of 7.38. he then went on the injured list for five weeks with right shoulder inflammation. However, after he returned at the end of July, he did much better, and did so for a team that had suddenly come out of nowhere to insert itself in the thick of the battle for a postseason slot. While wins were still hard to come by at first, he was now consistent, never giving up more than three runs in any of his first 5 starts after his return. Then on August 26th and September 1st, he pitched back-to-back gems against the Houston Astros and Cleveland Guardians, with scoreless outings of 8 and 7 innings in which he gave up only 2 hits both times. Both opponents were leading their division at the time, but he was credited with his second and third wins of the season, by scores of 2-0 and 3-0. He finished his rookie season at 4-7, 4.90 in 23 starts, with 111 strikeouts in 117 2/3 innings.
In 2023, he took a big step forward as one of the best pitchers on an Orioles team that was among the best in the American League. He started 30 games and logged 168 2/3 innings, finishing at 12-7, 2.83 with 168 strikeouts. He had the third-best ERA and fourth-best WHIP in the AL and finished fourth in the voting for the 2023 American League Cy Young Award. He started Game 1 of the Division Series against the Texas Rangers on October 7th. He gave up 2 runs on 7 hits in 4 2/3 innings, racking up 9 strikeouts against just one walk, but was charged with his team's 3-2 loss, the first loss of a three-game sweep. He missed the start of the 2024 season with a right UCL sprain, made a couple of brief rehabilitation assignments with the Bowie BaySox and Norfolk Tides before starting his first big league game of the season against the New York Yankees on May 2nd. He gave up 1 run on 4 hits in a 7-2 win, but had to leave after 4 2/3 innings, having reached his pitch count limit. On May 26th, he tossed seven hitless innings in defeating the Chicago White Sox, 4-1, to complete a four-game sweep. He struck out 11 batters, tying his career high, before leaving the game after having made 103 pitches; Danny Coulombe then surrendered a homer to Danny Mendick in the 8th to end the no-hit bid. His ERA stood at 1.75 after that start, his fifth of the season.
