Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Kutter Crawford made his major league debut for the Boston Red Sox as an emergency starter against the Cleveland Indians on September 5, 2021. Eleven Red Sox players were on the COVID-19 injury list at the time, including scheduled starter Nick Pivetta, who was added to the list the day of the game. Kutter gave up 5 runs in 2 innings and was charged with the 11-5 loss. It was his only big league appearance of the season, but in 2022, he pitched in 21 games, including 12 as a starter, going 3-6, 5.47 and logging 77 1/3 innings.
He took a step forward in 2023 when he pitched a total of 129 1/3 innings, spread out over 31 games (23 starts), putting up a record of 6-8, 4.04 with 135 strikeouts. There was a lot to like about those numbers, and in 2024, he started the season on a roll as after five starts, he was leading the American League with an ERA of 0.66. He had given up only 3 runs over 27 1/3 innings, but had only one win to show for his great pitching, as on two occasions he had pitched at least five innings of scoreless ball only to end up with a no-decision.
His brother Jonathon Crawford pitched in the minor leagues.
