Biographical Information

Kris Sutton pitched two seasons in the minors.

Sutton was the Class 6A high school player of the year in Florida in 1997. He pitched at Polk Community College then transferred to Tampa. As a senior in 2001, he set the NCAA Division II record for saves (19; the old mark was 17). He went 2-2 with a 2.09 ERA and was named the Division II Pitcher of the Year by Baseball America; both Baseball America and the American Baseball Coaches Association picked him as an All-American. The record for saves stood for four years before Adam Zimmerman notched 20.

Sutton was picked by the Anaheim Angels in the 30th round of the 2001 amateur draft, one round after they picked Carlos Corporan. In his pro debut for the Boise Hawks, Kris was 2-1 with four saves and a 3.96 ERA in 23 games. He allowed a .361 average, though. The Angels didn't keep him around for another chance. In 2002, he went to the independent leagues; with the Amarillo Dillas, the light-throwing (peak in the 80s) right-hander went 6-3 with 20 saves and a 2.64 ERA, walking just 6 and allowing only one homer in 61 1/3 IP. He tied for second in the Central Baseball League in saves. It was his final season in pro baseball.
